The Korean War began by interrupting the American adjustment to peace following World War Two, and ended not only without a victory but with a United States loss of life and suffering comparable to Vietnam. Even today, nearly four times as many American MIAs from the Korean War remain unaccounted for as from Vietnam. Ensign Charles F. Cole, graduated from Cornell University in 1950, and was also in the first Naval ROTC class to be commissioned. Cole and his classmates anticipated two years of peace-time duty to repay their obligation. Instead, within a few weeks of graduation, they were swept into the Navy's frantic preparation to re-equip a Navy whose war-time strength and proficiency had been decimated by military cutbacks. The skeleton Navy force on duty in both Atlantic and Pacific fleets was quickly augmented by those 1950 NROTC Ensigns and the recall of World War II Reservists. The former provided the large number of Ensigns needed by an expanded Navy. The latter, who still retained their World War II skills, provided the expertise needed to man the ships coming out of mothballs. Cole is unstinting in his praise for the returning Reservists. He and his fellow classmates are an emphatic affirmation of the value of the NROTC program envisioned by Dr. (Captain) Arthur Adams and named in honor of Admiral James Holloway. Without those NROTC Ensigns and the returning Reservists, the United States Navy's participation in the first year of the Korean War would have been minimal at best. Cole served eighteen months on the USS Ozbourn off the Korean coast. Underwater Demolition Teams began during world War II to help ensure the safety of forces landing on the various Atlantic and Pacific beaches. This type of unconventional warfare was in its infancy when Cole took his Navy demolition training in 1951. North Korea's invasion of South Korea in the summer of 1950 caught the United States by surprise. In the early months of the conflict, the Navy struggled to equip and man ships to support land troops and implement the blockade. Without the recalled Naval Reservists and the newly commissioned Class of 1950 Naval ROTC Ensigns, the Navy would have been hard pressed to send ships to Korea. AUTOGRAPHED COPY! OUT-OF-PRINT! This excellent book follows the lives and careers of two German Luftwaffe aces; Graf and Grislawski. It is written by the same authors of "Black Cross, Red Star". The two men were like chalk and cheese, but they complimented each other well and became good friends. Graf, the quiet conscientious type that belied his determination while Grislawski was brash, hot-headed and stood for no nonsense. Grislawski came from a working class background and hardship and his refusal to join the Hitlerjugend vitually railroaded his chances of becoming a pilot from the outset, but was able to join the navy as naval flier to receive flight training. The book is extremely well written and thought out and we see two inexperienced flyers slowly develop in confidence and develop into hardened veterans and aces of immense skill. The book seems to interchange from a biographical mode to one that describes events and experiences first hand, providing excellent and enthralling accounts of some aerial combat. The book talks of German fighter pilots (including Graf) driven onward to fly as many missions as possible despite exhaustion and fatigue, to achieve the Knights Cross decoration. (Neck-Itches as referred to in the book). Graf was effectively grounded by the Nazi hierachy after becoming the first man to reach two hundred victories and this is when his obsession for the love of soccer became more apparant. Grislawski's fighter career continued and he became the mentor to Erich Hartmann and Hartmann likewise Grislawski's protege'. Despite all Grislawski's experience on the Russian front it was ironically his transfer to the Western front that caused him to realize the meaning of total war, for this is where he saw German pilots machine-gunned in their parachutes by American fighter pilots. The unrelentless Allied aerial assualt became a huge mounting cost for the Luftwaffe. The book also covers the captivity of Graf and Grislawski and the authors find no evidence of Graf's alleged cooperation with the Soviets after examining his POW file. Overall, this is a first class book, easy and exciting to read, with many photographs (some from Grislawski's private collection). It also includes a section of colour profiles of the machines Graf and Grislawski flew and a full tally of their confirmed kills. RETAIL $54.95 ... SAVE 50%

The new medicines were not penicillin and antibiotics, but sulfonamides, or sulfa drugs. The sulfa drugs preceded penicillin by almost a decade, and during World War II they carried the main therapeutic burden in both military and civilian medicine. Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson, an Irishman who in June 1922 was assassinated on his doorstep in London by Irish republicans, was one of the most controversial British soldiers of the modern age. Before 1914 he did much to secure the Anglo-French alliance and was responsible for the planning which saw the British Expeditionary Force successfully dispatched to France after the outbreak of war with Germany. A passionate Irish unionist, he gained a reputation as an intensely 'political' soldier, especially during the 'Curragh crisis' of 1914 when some officers resigned their commissions rather than coerce Ulster unionists into a Home Rule Ireland. During the war he played a major role in Anglo-French liaison, and ended up as Chief of the Imperial General Staff, professional head of the army, a post he held until February 1922. After Wilson retired from the army, he became an MP and was chief security adviser to the new Northern Ireland government. As such, he became a target for nationalist Irish militants, being identified with the security policies of the Belfast regime, though wrongly with Protestant sectarian attacks on Catholics. He is remembered today in unionist Northern Ireland as a kind of founding martyr for the state. Wilson's reputation was ruined in 1927 with the publication of an official biography, which quoted extensively and injudiciously from his entertaining, indiscreet, and wildly opinionated diaries, giving the impression that he was some sort of Machiavellian monster. In this first modern biography, using a wide variety of official and private sources for the first time, Keith Jeffery reassesses Wilson's life and career and places him clearly in his social, national, and political context.

Skaay of the Qquuna Qiighawaay may have been one of the greatest Native storytellers of all time. In the heavily forested foothills of the Andes Mountains in Ecuador, a Shuar healer named Alejandro Tsakimp leads many lives. He is a peasant who sells cattle and lumber, a member of the Shuar Federation, a son and a brother, a husband and a father, a student and a worker, and, finally, a troubled shaman. Being a healer has long been both a burden and a resource, for the power to cure is also the power to kill, and shamans like Tsakimp are frequently in danger from accusations of witchcraft. But the situation of the Shuar today is especially perilous, and Tsakimp must constantly negotiate relations of power not only with rival shamans and his patients, but with the better-educated and richer officials of the Shuar Federation and his own siblings as well. In his own words, Alejandro Tsakimp tells of his lives and relationships, the practice of shamanism, and the many challenges and triumphs he has encountered since childhood. He was born at the time when Shuar were first confronting the impact of Ecuadorian colonialism, which had triggered devastating intertribal conflict over the production and trade of shrunken heads and intratribal feuding fueled by accusations of witchcraft. Although the Antarctic ice pack and some offshore islands had been sighted and even landed upon briefly as early as the 1820s, it was not until an eccentric Anglo-Norwegian explorer, Carsten F. Borchgrevink, went ashore in 1895 that a human being set foot on the Antarctic continent. Constance Reep Unsworth was an editor and managing editor of the children's newspaper Weekly Reader for over 30 years. Upon her father's death, Unsworth found copies of her grandfather Thomas P. Reep's books about Abraham Lincoln's life in New Salem, Illinois, including Lincoln and New Salem from 1918. Realizing the importance of her grandfather's research, she has rewritten and edited Lincoln and New Salem for today's audiences and added an introduction about her grandfather, who was an important Lincoln scholar from 1890 until his death in 1960. The result is the new Lincoln book, Abe Lincoln and the Frontier Folk of New Salem, just published by history and military history publisher Southfarm Press. The village of New Salem, Illinois rose up out of the wilderness, tarried for a while, then disappeared. It was a small village, never housing very many people, and of little account socially and economically. It was like hundreds of other little frontier towns save for one thing: it may have been the most important influence on the character development of one of the greatest men the United States of America ever produced-Abraham Lincoln. Unsworth's grandfather, Thomas P. Reep, 1870-1960, was about 20 years old when he began researching Abraham Lincoln's life by interviewing people who had actually known Lincoln in the 1830s. Among those he interviewed was William G. Greene who had clerked at a New Salem country store with the future president. Reep, later a prominent attorney in Petersburg, Illinois, was active as a Lincoln historian for decades after he wrote and arranged for the private printing of Lincoln and New Salem in 1918, based on his original research. Many Lincoln historians, including Carl Sandburg, used Reep's research as a basis for their writings about Lincoln's life in the 1830s. Abe Lincoln and the Frontier Folk of New Salem (2002) is the only book currently in print that shows photographs of the actual individuals who influenced Lincoln's character in the 1830s. Reep was also interested in his family's connections with Lincoln's time in New Salem. Both the Reep family and Unsworth's grandmother's family, the Shipps, had ties to that period of Lincoln's life. When the Japanese struck Pearl Harbor, many American men joined the U. S. Navy and Coast Guard. Some became crew members of small ships they called the Donald Duck Navy. It is amazing that they had the mental and physical discipline to do this under cramped and brutal conditions.
